ⓘ How clear-water coverage is calculated

Statistics apply only to water cells in the selected region. The water domain comes from the ESL Gulf CFS mask developed for work by Miller and colleagues and reused by the hurricane dashboard. Land is excluded. Clear-water coverage is conservatively cloud-free observed water divided by all eligible water cells. Cloud/edge is calculated only among observed water, while satellite coverage gaps are reported separately as not observed.

Clear coverage combines observation coverage with NASA's conservative cloud-and-adjacent-pixel mask.

How to use this page

Scan daily true color for river-plume structure, fronts, sediment-rich water, haze, glint, and clouds.
Use the large daily chlorophyll panel for same-date biological context.
Use the stacked dissolved/detrital absorption and particle-backscattering panels to preview additional optical-property potential.
Use native OCI files—not these rendered images—for spectra, transects, values, quality flags, or publication analysis.

Interpretation limits

A bright or colored feature is not automatically a bloom or a concentration measurement. Clouds, sun glint, aerosols, CDOM, and suspended sediment affect coastal imagery and retrieval availability.

For archived dates, chlorophyll, ADG, and BBP all follow the daily selector. These Level-3 mapped fields remain subject to NASA quality screening and retrieval limitations.
